Here is my entry for Kaitlyn Leann Sanchez and Lydia Lukidis' Fall Frenzy Writing Contest!
It was inspired by this image:

LANTERN
(200 words)
I wish that I could be a thousand
Magic things for you:
Your mighty Mom Magnetic Field
That lets no danger through,
Your genie lamp, your guiding star,
Your talisman, your charm—
To grant your wishes, guide your way,
Protect against all harm.
I'd be these magic things for you
(plus others I forgot!)...
If only I were magical,
Which, sadly, I am not.
But I can be your lantern.
(If that would be all right?)
Your somewhat rusty, slightly dusty
Lantern in the night…
Whose frame is sort of broken and
Whose flame is just a spark,
But which (I’d like to think) could help you
Navigate the dark--
A sphere of light that lets you see
A pace or two ahead,
So you can step with confidence
Instead of doubt or dread,
A gentle glow to make the world
A little less unknown,
A steady presence by your side
That says, You’re not alone.
I wish that I could be a thousand
Magic things for you…
But I can be your lantern, dear,
And that will have to do.
Your rusty, dusty lantern—
Rather rickety and small,
But burning bright with love – the thing
Most magical of all.

Simply lovely!
